Comparative Study of MODIS Level 1 and Cloud Mask Products

Overview

This report presents comparative results of MODIS Collection 5 MODAPS and GDAAC Level 1 products (viz., L1A Geo-location and L1B Radiance) and the Level 2 Cloud Mask analyzed for 17 Terra and 10 Aqua data days. Comparison days begin near the start of each mission, on 5 March 2000 for Terra and 9 July 2002 for Aqua, and are spaced approximately every 4 data months. The last Terra and Aqua comparison days are 22 May 2005 and 14 June 2005, respectively. As both the GDAAC and MODAPS are separately producing and distributing Collection 5 Level 1 and Cloud Mask products, matching data are crucial to user interests. The outcome of this study finds the Geo-location, L1B Radiance and Cloud Mask products processed by the GDAAC and MODAPS to be scientifically equivalent.

PGE01 Comparisons

Unimportant Expected Differences

• The ProductionDateTime values were, of course, different.
• The LocalGranuleID values were different, because the final component of the LocalGranuleID contains the production time.
• The Geolocation InputPointer metadata correctly identified input L1A files with different Universal references (but presumably the same contents) for the two runs.
• The Geolocation LocalInputGranuleID correctly identified input L1A files with different LocalGranuleID values for the two runs.

Minor Expected Differences

The GDAAC used PGE01 v5.0.2, whereas MODAPS used PGE01 v5.0.9. The science code is almost identical; the only difference is improved code portability that should not affect the product files in any way. However, the MODAPS perl scripts were also changed, correcting the geolocation LocalVersionID from 5.0.2 back to 5.0.0.

The GDAAC used the Terra maneuver list with the RCS revision number 5.6, whereas MODAPS used 5.8, but none of the comparison days that were processed covered the maneuvers that were added or changed between those two versions.

ReprocessingActual was "processed once" at the GDAAC, while it was "reprocessed once" under MODAPS. The MODAPS PGE perl script was written to assume that we would always be doing reprocessing. This is easily changed, but within the MODAPS system, any given PGE version can only set ReprocessingActual to a single value for all granules produced using that version.

• The InputPointer metadata, being based upon Universal References, is formatted differently on the two systems because the DAAC fills in Universal References differently from the way MODAPS does. For example, the DAAC will use a UR like LGID:MYD01.A2005023.0130.004.2005023154641.hdf, where MODAPS will use one in the form MYD01.2.2005023T01:25:00.000000Z.NA.27612636.500100_2.hdf.
• The DAAC uses the value of ProcessingEnvironment that was present in the PCF we created for the test run we send them when delivering our code, rather than updating it to describe their own processing environment. Their products therefore claim to have been produced on "IRIX64 modular 6.5 01100601 IP27". This is acceptable, since ProcessingEnvironment was added to MODIS product files only for the purpose of distinguishing MODAPS products; we've explicitly told the GDAAC that we don't care what value they use for GDAAC products. In MODAPS, the correct value is used, depending upon the actual processing environment. For example: "IRIX64 mtvs1 6.5 10070055 IP35".
• The utcpole.dat file used by MODAPS had been updated on 2005-07-01, while the one used by the GDAAC had been updated on 2005-03-17. As a result, they contained small differences that were largest for times close to and after 2005-03-17, and extending all the way back to 2004-03-23, with diminishing size. As a result, correspondingly small differences were seen in those granules which were for data days later than that one, the largest of which was two orders of magnitude smaller than our error budget.

Unexpected differences

Some of the Aqua MODAPS files for 2003-063 were processed using version 1 attitude files, while the corresponding GDAAC files were processed using version 2 attitude files. This was unexpected, because until we noticed the resulting difference in ground position, we didn't realize that attitude files came in two different versions. To avoid future problems of this type, we need to purge our archives of the version 1 files. A re-run using version 2 attitude files produced an exact match to the GDAAC products.

PGE02 Comparisons

Unimportant Expected Differences

• The ProductionDateTime was, of course, different.
• The LocalGranuleID values were different, because the final component of the LocalGranuleID contains the production time.
• The InputPointer metadata correctly identified input files with different Universal references (but presumably nearly equivalent contents) for the two runs.
• The LocalInputGranuleID correctly identified input files with different timestamps in their LocalGranuleIDs for the two runs.
• ProcessingCenter was "GSFC" in the DAAC products, and "MODAPS" for MODAPS products.
• ProcessingEnvironment was filled in incorrectly by the GDAAC with the string "/usr/bsd/hostname". The MODAPS run contains correct values, depending upon the processing machine, such as "Linux minion435 2.4.18-27.7.xsmp".

Minor Expected Differences

Our Irix and Linux C compilers differ in the details of their handling of floating point optimizations. Tests indicate that the Linux calculations are slightly more accurate than the Irix ones. Virtually every number in the PGE02 product files is either a calculated floating point number or is a scaled integer (SI) calculated by conversion from a floating point number. The GDAAC always uses Irix platforms, while MODAPS uses both Irix and Linux platforms. For the scaled integer data that constitutes the bulk of the PGE02 product files, when MODAPS uses a Linux machine we expected to see a small number of pixels with a difference of +/-1, and no differences larger than that, and that the small differences should average out to almost exactly 0. Except as otherwise noted, that's exactly what we found.

Significant Unexpected Differences

The GDAAC Terra runs were performed using LUTs v5.0.6.1 or 5.0.6.3, the latest versions available at the time of the GDAAC runs. The MODAPS Terra runs all used LUTs v5.0.6.5, a more current version. With two minor exception, the differences between those LUT versions were irrelevant for this reprocessing, since they only involved updates to time-dependent LUTs for data dates that were long after the dates in the Comparison Days list.

For Terra 2000-048T22:55, an apparantly large discrepancy turned out to be acceptable descpite its size: a roundoff difference in a floating point number changed the corresponding scaled integer from the largest value indicating a valid reflectance, into an error code indicating that cross-talk correction had pushed the value over it's maximum.

We consider acceptable any PGE02 granule where only the expected differences are observed, including scaled integer (SI) differences that never go outside the range of [-1,1]. Larger SI differences are acceptable for any granule where MODAPS used optional input files that the GDAAC failed to use. It is unacceptable for MODAPS to fail to use optional inputs that were used by the GDAAC; after correction of the problems described above, all granules examined were deemed acceptable.

Cloud Mask Comparisons

MODIS Cloud Mask product differences (GDAAC vs. MODAPS) can arise from several possible sources. The MODAPS computing architecture is a hybrid system consisting of Linux and SGI Origin systems. The distinct computer environments require different but similar Fortran compilers, for instance, to permit data processing requests to be fulfilled on either the SGI host or one of its Linux minions. The GDAAC, in contrast, processes solely on SGI Origins. Under these circumstances, some discrepancies can be expected when MODAPS Linux files are matched against GDAAC IRIX products in statistical comparisons. Compiler optimization levels and other flags are not completely conformable across computer systems and variations in CPU precision may result in further disagreements.

The MODIS Geo-location (PGE01) and L1B Radiance (PGE02) products, which are also processed on Linux and SGI hosts at MODAPS, are primary inputs to the Cloud Mask (PGE03). Data differences occurring in these upstream inputs can impact the Cloud Mask as well, but usually the effect is small. More important, are slight differences in MODAPS and GDAAC Cloud Mask ancillary production rules that may lead to the selection of distinct ancillary data granules. This type of difference has the potential of introducing significant changes in the Cloud Mask result.

From an algorithm point of view, Cloud Mask results are subject to more uncertainty when scene radiances place clear-sky confidence levels near output confidence category boundaries (0.99, 0.95, 0.66). In such cases, a small change of 0.02K in brightness temperature is enough move results from one confidence category to an adjacent one, back or forth. Large numbers of these uncertain confidences (in the tens of thousands) are necessarily associated with granules containing higher than average amounts of probably cloudy and/or probably clear results, but predicting the exact scene types or meteorological conditions cannot be done at this time.

As an example of this effect, consider granule 2005142 at time 0225, which contains over 27000 byte differences between the MODAPS (Linux) and GDAAC (IRIX) products. Following the University of Wisconsin practice, we sum the confident clear and probably clear categories to estimate total clear sky. The MODAPS and GDAAC sums are 32.40 and 32.47 percent, respectively. The difference in the two estimates is 0.07 percent or approximately 1 in every 464 clear pixels (0.07/32.47). That is, for this granule, MODAPS has shifted only 0.2 percent of clear pixels to cloudy relative to the GDAAC product.

The percentages of clear and probably clear sky categories for this exercise were taken from the ECS Core metadata fields recorded in the Cloud Mask product. Specifically, the VeryHighConfidentClearPct (confident clear) and HighConfidentClearPct (probably clear) Product Specific Attributes (PSA) values were used.

Comparative Results

The tables that follow consist of 12-by-24 arrays of 5-minute MODIS granules, a single table for each data day. The 5-minute squares are color coded and enumerated from 0 to 3 according to the following translation table.

The Cloud Mask itself is a 3-dimensional byte array consisting of 6 planes or layers, each representing a spatial grid of 1354 pixels by 2030 1km lines (typical size). The byte values within each plane contain 1 or more bit flags. In this MODAPS/GDAAC study we assess quality of agreement at the byte level rather than the bit flag level that make up each byte. The computation is performed by examining byte values at each spatial grid box, in each of 6 vertical layers for a total of over 16 million bytes. Where there is a difference in byte value, including bytes with a Fill Value in one product and a valid value in the other, a single count is registered and accumulated into the granule sum. Typically, the lower the final sum, the better the agreement.

Most granules in this study are green indicating an ordinary amount of variation between the GDAAC and MODAPS. Yellow, orange and red color codes represent progressively more variation between products. The granule with the largest number of difference counts for each day is identified along with the number of byte differences.
