Abstract | PGE157 v6.0.6 1. Create a new PGE (PGE157) for temporal gap-filling of all bad quality or out of range LAI-FPAR (MxD15A2H) input values. 2. Assign new ESDTs (MOD15A2HGF/MYD15A2HGF) for these new year-end gap-filled LAI-FPAR products. 3. Set up new production rules and recipes to employ PGE157 to generate the MxD15A2HGF products at the end of each year. 4. Run several iterative sciences tests to evaluate and confirm these gap-filled LAI-FAPR products. |
Problem Statement | Prior to C6 reprocessing, the SCF at University of Montana generated and distributed gap-filled Evapotranspiration (MOD16) and GPP/NPP (MOD17) suite of products. Transitioning of these science processes for operational processing at MODAPS necessitated the creation of gap-filled LAI-FPAR from the operational 8-day LAI-FPAR products generated at MODAPS. A new operational process (PGE157) is needed to generate the gap-filled LAI-FPAR product (MxD15A2HGF) at the end of every year. |
Description of Change | Developed and put in place a new science product generation process (PGE157) to generate gap-filled LAI-FPAR inputs that includes the following steps: 1. Create gap-filled equivalent of operational MxD15A2H products, by employing a temporal gap-filling approach, ignoring all bad quality or out of range LAI-FPAR (MxD15A2H) input values. 2. Assign new ESDTs (MOD15A2HGF/MYD15A2HGF) for these new year-end gap-filled LAI-FPAR products. 3. Set up new production rules and recipes to employ PGE157 to generate the MxD15A2HGF products at the end of each year. |
Products Affected | 8-day year-end MxD15A2HGF products |
Software Affected | PGE157 v6.0.6 |
Processing String to Receive the Change | Terra and Aqua Forward Processing. Terra and Aqua Reprocessing. |
Downstream Product Effects | None |
Data Granules to be Used for Science Testing | These new year-end gap-filled MxD15A2HGF products have been tested and confirmed through several individual science tests as well as a full one-year test, including the impact on all the downstream, dependent MOD16 and MOD17 products. |
Justification | The MxD16 (ET) and MxD17 (GPP/NPP) 8-day and annual products produced at MODAPS, as part of the operational standard processing contain data gap from missing input data, bad quality and cloud contaminated observations in the input, and so are not considered suitable for any long-term studies. The user community have preferred to use the equivalent products, produced at SCF, which are produced at the end of the year by employing a temporal gap-filling approach to fill-in for the missing or bad quality input LAI-FPAR and BRDF values. Migration of this same temporal gap-filling approach, for LAI-FPAR values, at MODAPS entailed the creation of a new PGE (PGE157) and process (MOD_PR15A2GF) to generate the gap-filled LAI-FPAR inputs (MxD15A2HGF) that will be used by the downstream MOD16 and MOD17 PGEs to generate SCF equivalent year-end gap-filled products. |
Effective Date for Implementation of Change | PGE157 (6.0.6) is expected to go in forward production in C6 by July, 2019. The same PGE will also be used to process the MxD15A2HGF products for Terra and Aqua from respective start of mission. |
