Abstract PGE06 v6.0.83 Changes to choose new destripe_config_terra.dat.v4
Problem Statement In recent 2014 Terra cloud products, situations where Band 36 Detector 7 has failed led to striped 1km cloud top properties and striping in downstream cloud optical properties (MOD06_L2).
Description of Change PGE06 v6.0.83 A new de-striping config file for Terra (destripe_config_terra.dat.v4) was delivered as part of the PGE06 package. No science changes were made to either MOD_PR06CT or MOD_PRDS, only the addition of destripe_config_terra.dat.v4. Use of the new file results in detector #7 of Terra band 36 being replaced by detector #6. There are considerable improvements in the 1-km CTPs when using the new file. The update also fixes the issue with striping in cloud optical properties retrievals.
Products Affected MOD06_L2 (MYD06_L2 is not changed)
Software Affected PGE06 v6.0.83
Processing String to Receive the Change Terra Forward, Terra Reprocessing, Aqua Forward, Aqua Reprocessing
Downstream Product Effects Downstream products are not impacted as Detector 7 is not used in L3 aggregations.
Data Granules to be Used for Science Testing A one-day test was run and archived in AS1231 for review.2010-059
Justification Solved the striping problem evident in Terra 1km cloud products in 2014.
Effective Date for Implementation of Change Approximately Jan 1, 2004 and later for Terra reprocessing. All Terra C6 forward reprocessing.
Status Major algorithm development and testing completed. Steve Platnick approved on 11/19/2014. Michael King approved on 11/19/2014.
