Abstract | Introduction of Deep Blue aerosol parameters into L2 Aqua Atmosphere product (MYD04_L2). |
Problem Statement | The current MODIS aerosol retrieval algorithm is based on the dark target approach and, as a result, it provides less reliable or no retrieval data over desert and other highly reflecting land surfaces. To improve the quality of desert and bright surface retrievals, the aerosol team intendsto implement the Deep Blue retrieval algorithm along with the existingdark target method. |
Description of Change | PGE04 is restructured into 3 processes instead of the original 1, each with its own code package and executable. Separation of the three major components (Product File Generation, Dark Target Retrieval and Deep Blue Algorithm) ensures that the two science algorithms may interact independently with the output product, and also from each other. The executables run with Product File Generation first and Deep Blue last. The MODIS aerosol product will grow in size, but not significantly, due to the relatively coarse 10 km data resolution of both the Dark Target Retrieval and the Deep Blue Algorithm. |
Products Affected | MYD04_L2 |
Software Affected | PGE04 |
Processing String to Receive the Change | Aqua Forward, Aqua Reprocessing |
Downstream Product Effects | Four Deep Blue parameters are to be copied into the Atmosphere L2 Joint Product (MYDATML2). The same Deep Blue parameters will be input to L3 statistical processing. |
Data Granules to be Used for Science Testing | Use of the entire 16-day atmosphere seasonal Aqua science test data set will be needed. |
Justification | Implementing the Deep Blue algorithm will fill in the gap in the existing MODIS aerosol products over bright reflecting surfaces. |
Effective Date for Implementation of Change | Start of C5 Aqua Reprocessing. |
Status | Michael King approved for Atmosphere, Vincent Salomonsom approved on 02/23/07. |
