Abstract PGE159 6.1.9

Revised PGE159 6.1.9 for C61 using new mask files using ESDTs MCDWD_IRWMB & MCDWD_HRWMB, which have recurring flood information within them. Added ingest_MCDWD_L3_updated.pl and mcdwd_updateFloodLayers_recurringflood.py to update existing MCDWD_L3 file with updated reference water mask to populate recurring flood. Also, revised PGE159 and PGE159N LoaderModules to point to new mask files.

Problem Statement The MODIS C6.1 Flood Map product, MCDWD_L3, is now being generated for standard production. Initially, to generate the product over historical processing periods from 2000/055 through 2024/366. The effort was done using MODIS Flood Map suite of PGEs originally designed for NRT processing, which were then revised to support standard production runs. The data was generated in AS61 but then recently needed to be updated using revised Flood Map Mask files so that the data would reflect recurring flood data more accurately, which was a planned update for the datasets. PGEs used to support Flood Map include: PGE152, PGE155, PGE170 and PGE159, with PGE159 being the PGE that creates the final MCDWD_L3 product
Description of Change Initial version of Flood Map PGEs for C6.1 Historical and standard (leading edge) production used version of the Flood Map PGEs that initiated from the operational NRT versions. The primary difference between the NRT and standard variations was the implementation of the production rules for standard production. The NRT versions process data in a granular or hourly fashion, but the standard processing versions process the full data day at once, like other daily gridded products. The initial set of mask files used for this effort had ESDTs of MCDWD_HRWMA and MCDWD_IRWMA. This version was used to generate the mission data from 2000/055 to 2024/366 in AS61.

In August 2024, the Flood Map team delivered new sets for Mask files, which were setup to use ESDTs MCDWD_HRWMB and MCDWD_IRWMB, to differentiate them from the original set. These new Mask files were then applied to the MCDWD_L3 data that exists in AS61 in LAADS. The approach to do this was:

  1. Copy the existing MCDWD_L3 from AS61 to a different archive. AS1923 was archive used for update.
  2. Run python scripts, running on command line and not from MODAPS, to stage the data, run the update to apply the new mask files to the data, and revise some of the product metadata to reflect the update.
  3. Have data reviewed by Flood Map and LDOPE teams.
  4. Once approved, move the data from the alternative archive set to AS61; this will be the data set that is made public.
  5. Continue to process 2025 data using the new version of PGE159 6.1.9.

Data Granules to be Used for Science Testing Several tests were executed for the standard variations of Flood Map PGEs prior to initiating the historical processing of MODIS C6.1 Flood Map in AS1995 and AS1997 to verify data quality was as expected and production rules were implemented properly. Each test was reviewed by LDOPE and Flood Map teams. Additionally, a test was executed in AS91 on nrt4 for Flood Map team to confirm that new mask files used produced desired outputs. Further, when the rerun of data was done in AS1923, a small period was done initially, and then processing was held while data was reviewed. Once signed off on, reprocessing continued. In both cases, Flood Map team confirmed data looked as it should. LDOPE also reviewed the data in AS1923 and AS91 and confirmed data reflected desired updates.
Justification For historical record of MODIS Flood Map product.
Effective Date for Implementation of Change Flood Map processing effort for historical data is already underway, with 2000/055 to end 2024 complete. Processing of 2025 data will begin using the latest PGE159 6.1.9 and mask files once this PCR is approved.
